Urinary stones or kidney stones are a congregation of chemical substances present within the body. Normally, urine contains many dissolved chemical substances at a specific concentration. Conditions leading them to crystallize, thus leading to formation of stones. The size of urinary stones varies from that of a grain of sand to that of a golf ball. They can be single or multiple. These stones can lead to blockage of urinary flow that lead to a build up of toxins and destruction of tissues, thus causing serious kidney damage. Almost 80% of all kidney stones afflicting people in industrialized nations are calcium stones. They occur when there is too much calcium in the urine. A second type of kidney stone is made of uric acid. These stones are much less common than calcium stones. Uric acid stones occur because you have too much uric acid in your urine. They might occur if you have become dehydrated; for example, during strenuous exercise on a hot day or perhaps during an illness. Uric acid stones are common in people who have gout, a disease that causes high uric acid levels in the blood. Kidney stones strike most typically between the ages of 20 and 40 and 10% of the population suffers from urinary calculi. Men are three times as susceptible to urinary stones as women. Once a person gets urinary stones, the chances of a recurring stone are about 40% in the next five years, and 80% in the next 25 years. UniCal is useful in urinary calculi. It disintegrates the stone and flushes it out through the urinary tract. It also clears the excretion of certain substances formed due to metabolic dysfunction or poor diet that encourages kidney and bladder stone formation. Taken daily as a dietary supplement, UniCal keeps the kidneys and urinary tract flushed and working at optimum efficiency. It is especially helpful for persons with predisposing factors such as low urine output, high mineral content in diet and urinary crystalloid-colloid imbalance.

Drinking water increases the volume of urine. In the process, substances that form kidney stones are diluted, reducing the risk of kidney stone recurrence. For this reason, people with a history of kidney stones should drink 2 to 3 litres of fluid per day. It is particularly important that people in hot climates increase their fluid intake to reduce the risk of kidney stones. The consumption of refined sugar, carbohydrates can cause kidney stones, as the sugar stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, which in turn cause extra calcium to be excreted in the urine. Another cause is the excess consumption of vitamin C and oxalic acid which causes the excretion of oxalate. This is present in cooked spinach (not as much in raw) and rhubarb. Animal protein is also strongly associated with oxalate absorption. Avoid all saturated fats, fried foods, soft drinks, alcohol, black tea, chocolate and similar processed foods.
